Just Ask…..

There is a beautiful old apple tree at the front corner of our property as you pull down the long lane to our little log home. The apples on that tree this year are huge and they are ripe! But there is a little problem with those apples – we don’t own the tree! It is actually on our neighbors property – at the very tip of it. Now if you saw that tree you would be surprised to learn that it is on our neighbors property because with the lay of the land it looks like it should be ours.
The horses pasture is right near that apple tree and so for the last week or so we have been giving Mistletoe and Daisy some of the drops from that tree. We usually dig around the ground and look for apples that really wouldn’t make pies or applesauce but are suitable for our horses to snack on.
Early one morning last week I was out there walking Lucy and looking under the tree for dropped apples for our horses and it hit me. Is this how my life is sometimes? I dig around for the drops instead of just asking the owner if we can have some of the apples? I began to think about what I pray for and although I have learned to pray with earnest for lots of things; do I still sometimes look for drops instead of asking God for the fresh stuff?
I was thinking about our Heavenly Father and how He longs to bless us, yet scripture says “we have not because we ask not”. I have been told by more than one person that they don’t really want to ask God for things unless they are big. Almost like He surely wouldn’t want to be bothered by the little requests. But that idea is totally wrong!! Isn’t that kind of like picking up the drops instead of asking for the stuff hanging on the tree?
Thinking about my grown kids and even my little ones….I remember not that long ago our oldest Abigail needed something. But instead of asking daddy and I for it she went without. Silly her! We had it to provide but she didn’t want to “bother us”. I was almost frustrated with her for not asking….after all, we are her parents and we love to bless our kids whenever possible. But she chose the “drops” instead of the “fresh fruit”.
Recently I decided to put this idea into practice by asking very specifically for something. We buy alot of our needs at yard sales. I decided to ask the Lord for the “fresh fruit” instead of the “drops” in the yard sale arena. I asked Him to provide name brand clothes for us at yard sales. I thought it would be fun to see what happened. Sure enough, within a few weeks we happened upon a yard sale with all Hollister and American Eagle stuff for my teenagers. They were so tickled. The clothes were ‘gently used’ and dirt cheap.
There are some needs in my life right now. I am convinced that asking the Lord for the good stuff hanging on the tree is what He wants me to do and thats why He showed me that example the other morning with the apples. I absolutely don’t want to miss the opportunity for the Lord to provide big time by picking up the drops instead of asking for the fresh stuff!

  1. like making sure the little red chirping cardinal gets into the hands of someone very special…. those are the best prayers of all because we know beyond a doubt that He heard our heart…

  2. Wow. I don’t want to eat scraps. I want the good stuff. We often “settle” when the Creator, the King of the Kingdom, our Father, is waiting to give us the key to his Treasurey!
