Our Annual Fall Blow-Off

And we’re off………..

First necessary stop…..Second necessary stop….this sweet little place to purchase some goodies……..Yummmmmmm……..We discovered Summit Lake along the way……… Throwing stones in lakes….does it get any better than that?
Throw buddy throw!
What in the world???? A camel? A lama? A camalama? Who knows!! Too cool not to take a picture of though…..and check out those mountains – whooooaa What a sweet reflection……….

Oh my gracious!! Trout Lake….spectacular!!I love this big brother of mine….he’s the best! The gondola ride from Telluride to Mountain Village……Up, up and away………What can I say? I love red phone booths…………at 10,535 ft above sea level….Over the last thirty years married we have tried to take a Fall Blow-Off day. It started when Dw was in law school that first year married. One morning Dw looked at me and said, “I don’t want to go to school today, let’s go see the leaves and find apple cider and apples.” I called my boss and asked for the day off and away we went.

Eventually Dw was a lawyer and he would say, “I feel a fall blow-0ff day coming.” Then when the weather and leaves seemed perfect, he would say, “Today’s the day!” and would call his secretary and tell her to cancel his appointments we were heading for our Fall Blow-Off day.

Somehow it just seems even that much more fun when there are other things we are supposed to be doing. Back when we lived in Western New York we would head to Letchworth State Park. Letchworth has been called the Grand Canyon of the East and it is breathtakingly gorgeous! One of its entrances is about 15 minutes from where Dw grew up.

When we lived in Virginia we would head toward Charlottesville – also gorgeous!

Well two days ago Dw said, “I’m taking a vacation day on Thursday – we are going for a Fall Blow-off day.”

So yesterday we headed to Telluride. Starbucks first (of course!), then on to “discover” a bakery – somewhere, anywhere…and we indeed found one tucked away in quaint little Mancos, Colorado.

The leaves, although not the Northeast variety of colors, were brilliant yellow. We were all in awe of God’s artistic brush strokes against the backdrop of the majestic Rocky Mountains. I took a zillion pictures and at one point Graham said, “Boy is this going to be a long blog!” =)

In Telluride, we met our “son” Ben (whose job takes him to Telluride 2 days a week) for lunch at Smugglers. Then up and away on a gondola ride with a panaramic view of some of the most beautiful scenery in all of creation.
We came home refreshed and energized….and just for record, take a fall blow-off if you are able………..enjoy your family and the beauty of the handiwork of God.

  1. oooooh. A long time ago we flew into Denver and made a loop via Vail, down and around to Leadville 🙂 and then onto Aspen etc.. It was amazing. It was July and we saw snow at the top of one of those passes you go through to get to Leadville. Soooo much fun. Thanks for the pics – and evoking memories of our own!

I think the idea of a Fall Blow Off is a tradition to be nationally noted. Perhaps we can see if the next administration can add another Govt. holiday?? 🙂

  2. Ramsey and I did the gondola ride from Telluride to Mountain Village…beyond amazing!

So sorry I didn’t get to see you while we were in Durango!!

I’m sure Carie is very disappointed she wasn’t in service to hear your now-famous (infamous?) announcement!!

    Love ya,
    Bette
