Tonight’s the Night! My Very First Ride-A-Long!

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I was taking a course to become a Volunteer Chaplain with our city Police Department. I have only begun the process, but so far I’ve loved the training.
Tonight I have my very first “roll-call” and “ride-a-long” at 9:00pm. I am pretty tickled. When I first told our Tyler that I was going to become a chaplain, he was really quite pleased. I told him how they went around the room and asked why each one of us wanted to do this. All the men before me had spoken and finally it was my turn. I simply said, “My son is in the special forces for our great country and he encounters things that he is never allowed to talk about. I know that our police department also has many simliar situations they encounter with no one to talk to also. I would like to be someone that they can talk to.” The man in charge just stared at me and said, “Ooookay.”
When I told Tyler that he laughed and said, “So Mom, I’m sure the next guy was thinking, oh crap, what can I say to top that? Ummmm, let’s see I have two kids in the special forces….” It made me laugh. I wish you all could meet my TyTy…you would just love him.
In the class we learned that as chaplains we will be on a call rotation, often getting called out in the middle of the night for death notifications, SWAT team situations, or even hostage situations.
We were also told that if we are told to stay in the car – we stay in the car!! I guess one time a chaplain was doing a ride-a-long and shots started being fired everywhere. **gulp** If the officer is in trouble, we are to call on the radio for back-up.
I have wanted to be a chaplain for our police department for as long as I can remember – kind of my way of giving back to our community. (Just in case any one is wondering – Dw is in full support of me doing this!)
Today on the phone when I was making the final arrangements for tonight the Captain said, “Now remember – you can’t bring a weapon along”…I laughed and said, “The only weapon I will be bringing, sir, is prayer!” He laughed and said, “That’s the one we need!” Pray for me, if I should come to mind! It will definitely be a first! Yippee Jesus!

  1. Okay even though I can’t say that doing what you’re doing is something I’ve ever wanted to do – it does sound very exciting. What an awesome way for God to use you Linn. You’ll be perfect for it. I can just imagine you being the angel that someone who is going through something very difficult, will talk to. You will be such a gift to them. Sweet! Love you and will be praying for you.

  2. I have never personally met you bet I know this is will be a perfect job for you. You will be the shining light that someone needs during a difficult time.

On a lighter note, I bet you will have a great story to blog about tomorrow. Have fun tonight and I will be praying for you.

  3. So what’s next for you Linn…the Space Shuttle? Mrs. America Contest? Perhaps training for the next Olympics?….oh wait, I know you, you will do all of the above and then some.

    You go girl!

    Love you Wonder Woman!

  4. I believe you will be the best Chaplain Durango has ever seen. May God’s protection fall all around you Miss Linn. May God’s goodness just shine all around you. This police thing sounds right up your alley. I think next you should head into the investigative part. Be Detective.. catch the bad guy…. then pray for him. 😉 lv, jen
