We’re Expecting: A New Daughter-In-Love!!!

Abigail took the pictures of Ty and Sarah just before Tyler deployed last time…..

Our oldest son, Tyler, recently texted me to say, “I’m asking her to marry me, if I don’t chicken out….”
What is it with “popping the question” that just sends a guy into a tailspin? What is up with the true bravery of our son….sacrificing personal comfort (as does the rest of our Armed Forces) on a daily basis, risking his life to protect our nation from future terrorist attacks….but when it comes to asking his longtime girlfriend to marry him courage seems to wane and heroic measures dwindle…….
Just kind of comical the bundle of nerves these guys turn into when it is time to pop the question….our son-in-love Ryan drove 14 hours from California three years ago to ask for our daughter’s hand in marriage. We had no idea he was coming. Ryan and Abigail met in Bible college. His dad was (at the time) a pastor in our denomination and Ryan is #2 of 12 (yes you read that right – 12) kids. They had dated for several years. I’ll never forget the day…….
Three years ago right about now Dw and I were sitting on our back deck and his cell phone rang. The number was Ryan’s and Dw answered. I heard Dw say, “You’re here?? In our city?” I grabbed Dw’s arm and nearly shook it off, whispering rather loudly, “he’s come to ask for her hand – he’s come to ask for her hand, he’s come to ask for her hand!?!?!!”….
Dw was pretty clueless when he hung up from talking to Ryan and telling him to come up to our house…Dw said, “ya think?” I’m like, “Ummm, I doubt he just drove 14 hours to swing by and see if we still have our “Do Not Remove Under Penalty of Law” tags on all our mattresses..”
Turns out Ryan had driven for 14 hours bringing with him two of his brothers and another good friend (all for moral support) and then they had sat in a coffee shop for TWO HOURS as Ryan worked up his nerve, sweating the entire time, to call us to see if he could “stop over”.
When Ryan and his posse got up to our home we talked a bit and then the three of us went out on our back deck. It turns out that Abigail had absolutely no idea that Ryan had left California to ask for Daddy for her hand.
Ryan started by saying something like, “I’m sure you know why I’m here…..” to which my husband, loving the obvious pain, stress and nervousness that Ryan was trying desperately to endure said, “No Ryan, not really – why don’t you tell us why?” Dw thought that was just so funny…..
We had a long, serious talk, asking tough questions and then joyfully gave him our blessing. We then took he and his posse to dinner and sent them on their way where they drive straight back to California. We were sworn to secrecy….
And a few days later our phone rang and Miss Abigail said, “Mom did Ry really drive out there and ask you and Daddy if he could marry me?” I guess when Ryan asked her, her first response was, “Did you go ask my Daddy first?” =)
The rest is history….they decided to have all the siblings in the wedding and it was sweet and fun and we love our precious son Ryan……..
Abigail and Ryan – married May 2006

So here we are……and Tyler has asked Sarah the big question giving her 1/2 carot princess cut diamond ……..and we are anticipating another wedding….. they want to get married in our yard next summer, after Tyler gets home from his next deployment….and once again, the rumor is, that all the siblings will be in the wedding. We pray that Jubilee is home by then……..And for the record, there is just something extra special about all the friendships that having adult kids and their spouses offers….it’s a blast!! But that empty nest thing will always be pretty yukky sounding to this mama and daddy and so we will keep working feverishly to “fill ‘er up”……..
