Grateful/Thankful Thursday – LaVeta Pass

This Grateful/Thankful Thursday I have to tell you a little story. When we were driving home this past Friday night with our RV it broke down on LaVeta Pass. It is a mountain pass in SE Colorado. It is long and desolate.

The RV had been sputtering and sputtering and all of a sudden it just died. It was partially blocking a lane. It was very scary. We have driven this road many, many times and there has never been cell coverage. Ever. No matter what. I couldn’t imagine what we were going to do. But God!!

We climbed out because Dw was concerned for our safety. What if a semi, truck or car came up the hill and around the curve and didn’t see us quick enough. We could easily be hit and injured or worse yet, killed.

I was carrying Elijah and realized as I was climbing the rock mountainside (at about a 70 degree angle) that I had a choice. I was going to be the determining factor as to how this time on the side of the mountain with our beloved RV broken down would go. Would we grumble, belly-ache and complain or would I lead the kids in gratefulness/thankfulness?? Ultimately I would be training them for circumstances where things are out of their control. I am not telling you to toot a horn or get a pat on the back. I believe God has called me to mentor some of you and so here’s what I did.

Before we even sat down I said, “Okay guys. Let’s play the Thankful Game. What are you thankful for? I am thankful that it is NOT raining out.” Immediately Isaiah said, “I’m thankful it’s not thundering and lightening.” WOW! Me too, little buddy, me too!! We then began naming thing after thing we were thankful/grateful for. We were thankful that the freezing temps didn’t include snow/sleet/hail/rain/thunder/lightening, etc. We were thankful that we had blankets. We were thankful that we had sweatshirts (we had no winter coats, but hey, we had sweatshirts with hoods!!). And on and on.

Eventually the RV started and it crawled about 50 yards up the mountain and died for its last time. When we climbed out this time I was thankful that the slope of the mountain at that spot was less steep. (At the first stop my bee-hind got a real work-out trying to hold the babies while gravity was working to pull us down the mountainside.)

We ended up at that second spot on the mountainside (50 yards from the first) for 3 hours while we waited for a tow. Miraculously a text had successfully gone from my cell asking Josh or Autumn or Tavvy to call the state troopers for us. Really, it was a miracle!! Anyway, three hours later two tow trucks arrived to carry all of us the next 30 miles up the mountain and down the other side.

The RV was left in the WalMart parking lot in Alamosa where we could sleep for the night because all the hotels in Alamosa were full due to college homecoming (of course they were!). The RV was freezing with no heat, but we were thankful that we could snuggle.

Anyway, Graham (on his own) insisted on climbing down to the RV to get my camera cause he thought all of you would like to see our little mound snuggling completely covered by the blanket trying to maintain our body heat. LaVeta Pass was 19 degrees that night as we sat there!!

So sweet friends, we are thankful/grateful that we were protected. That we had only cold weather, not the other stuff that could have accompanied it. We were thankful for our sweatshirts and our hoods. We were thankful that we had each other. We were thankful for the tow trucks. We were thankful for the flares that warned people of our RV on the side.

I pray that our experience reminds you, that no matter what the circumstance, we all have lots to be thankful/grateful for!! Our God is awesome and He is working, even when things don’t look like it – even to get a text sent in a non-service area of a mountain pass!! We praise His name!!

So what are you Grateful/Thankful for this Thursday?? Do tell!!

  1. Well I'm thankful for you!
When in doubt think (try really hard) to think like Linny.
How's that? Would you mind much if in the middle of my next disaster I call you immediately for advise? OH, only kidding, just promise to keep posting about them so when it eventually happens in my house I know what to do. Hugs!

  2. Linny,

You are simply amazing! I thought all along that you all slept in the RV in the parking lot – not that that was much better. Thank God that you all are okay and survived the freezing cold night! You are very right that in EVERY situation we have much to be thankful/grateful for and most of us don't remember that. I promise to try harder!

  3. WOW- we love the movie Polyanna for that reason- the Glad Game 🙂 Oh even when life gets crazy we can always be glad. I am glad today that our dossier has been sent- a week later than my original plan, but sent nonetheless….and we are one step closer to our sweet Naomi Caroline! VERY THANKFUL!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Beautiful story Linny and yes indeed GOD is so good and I am THANKFUL/GRATEFUL for the fact that HE protected all of you out there. PRAISE HIM!!!!

    Love and blessings, Kristy

  5. Linny, thank you for posting this. It's a great lesson that we all need to practice and I've shared a link to your post with a few family members.

The picture sure makes your experience so much more real to us, too!

  6. I'm grateful for your grateful (mentoring) heart! 🙂

And I had to laugh at Emma looking like a deer in the headlights in that last shot… too cute!

  7. Thank you, Linny, for your honesty, and perspective. It always comes at a good time.

P.S. I had NO idea you slept OUTSIDE. I thought you were sleeping INSIDE the RV the whole time! I prayed ALL WRONG! 🙂 hehe.

  8. Dearest Linny,

Your blog is changing me one step at a time. Thank you is just not quite enough, but I am so grateful that I stumbled onto your blog.

I am curious where that dear old sweet RV is now?

  9. I have often shared with moms that it is the mom's attitude that sets the tone for the whole family. I, too, consciously work to be thankful even in the midst of tough circumstances. We, too, have had a very "eventful" Road Trip … but we have always found things to be thankful. When our trailer tire exploded, we were very thankful that we were on the flat plains of Kansas, rather than the snowy mountain passes of CO, as originally planned.

Two days ago, I had a TOUGH day … and, guess what, all the kids had a TOUGH day, too. Oops … Mama wasn't setting a good example.

  10. I love this attitude in you! You are always making lemonade out of the lemons! I do actually think of you when I am in a frustrating situation and try to make the best of it, try to have some humor and try to think of things I am grateful for even though it is a challenge!

The best part for me is seeing how that attitude has caught on to your children! You are giving them a life long gift by teaching them this!!

Way to go girlfriend! You inspire me!!

  11. Oh, Linny, even though I'm not always able to comment (been living in Guatemala with limited internet access), I'm always reading and thus always encouraged and inspired. Praise God for His protection for you and your family. I'm also thankful for your willingness to openly share what God has done and is doing in your life. I continue to cover your adoption of Jubilee with prayer and continue to remember Josh's family as they approach the month anniversary of losing their son.

    Much Love,
    Kathie

  12. My 7 year old son has been having trouble with anger & his temper. Today when he got upset, I asked him to say some things that he was thankful for. He asked me why I hadn't done that 3 years ago! It instantly calmed him down. Thanks so much for all of your wisdom! You have such a sweet & calm way to speak to children & I love reading your blog!

  13. I want you to know I'm single and from a family of non-believers, so you are an exceptional role model to me to be constantly thankful for my Lord's blessings and eventually teach my children the same thing!

p.s. looking back I hope it was fun for you all 🙂
