Striving For Simplicity – Hunt No More!

Striving for Simplicity is a now a weekly post for all those who are intrigued by living simply or are Striving for Simplicity. Whether you are single, have a boatload of kids or anything in between, living in simplicity can be so freeing. You can read how our journey began here.

I began last week with sharing a bit of our journey toward Simplicity. It has been a long process and we are not there yet!

One of my biggest frustrations is the whole “time” thing or better put “the hunt”. Why is it so frustrating? Because it steals my time – which I seem to not have much extra of! Like having to hunt for a pair of socks for one of the little ones {that’s why they’re all kept in a basket in the laundry room now, not far from the shoes.} Or the time it takes to hunt for a match to a shoe on a Sunday morning – argghhh. {That’s why Sunday shoes are now stored separately – so they don’t get “lost” during the week.} Or the time it takes to hunt for a sweatshirt {and that’s why they are all hung in one spot and the four little guys can reach them themselves and in one glance I can see if their hooks are empty – meaning they need to go find them and hang them up}.

But probably the thing that would get me the most was the hunt for band-aids and Neosporin {I swear someone used to eat the tubes, cause they would disappear like there was no tomorrow!} Or how about the stumbling around in the night hunting for chewable {Equate brand} Tylenol in the night, or the frustration in the night hunting for Vicks Vapor Rub?

Which is totally a side note here but, we never buy cough syrup. I steer away, as much as possible from cough medicines or any medicines for that matter, preferring to let our bodies heal themselves…but I heard a little trick many years ago….so when someone in our home has a cough, we rub the Equate brand of Vicks Vapor rub on the bottom of their feet and put a pair of thick socks on. Voila! Coughing done. {Oh yes, we rub it on chest as well.} Simple and frugal! I haven’t bought cough syrup for the kids in probably 10 or 15 years!

Anyway, so to simplify my life I bought two adorable little purses at a yard sale for about $.25 each. In each little purse is the off-brand of each of these items: Neosporin, Band-aids, Tylenol, Vicks Vapor rub, a few cough drops, Pamprin. the babies “Africa” lotion and some sanitary pads…..

Then I pounded about 7 feet up {not kidding} a nail in a closet upstairs and one in our master closet, which I hang each little purse. Nobody short can reach either sack. {Nobody short needs to reach it!} And then, whether day or night, whichever floor I am on, I can easily reach, get what I need – cause no one has heisted it {cause no one short can reach it} – and there is no hunting and hunting or stumbling around in the night.

I have been doing this for many years and it works well. It’s simple. Your “purse” might be filled with completely different things, but that’s what we seem to need and what I always seemed to hunt for.

Please share your simplifying journey or tips that have made your life simpler, as you Strive for Simplicity. Or perhaps share what you would put in your sack, cause it’s what you are always hunting for…don’t be shy….cause we are encouraging each other with our ideas, tips, thoughts….

Please follow the rules {if you don’t I will delete it}….If you are going to post a link to your blog post…The rules are simple! =) You must be a friend, meaning your picture is on the right sidebar under “follower”…you must post a permalink {which means a link to the exact simplifying post you did….you must mention in your post A Place Called Simplicity and link back to here. For more detailed directions or how to do a permalink, click here. There were some really great ideas shared last week….

  1. Vicks works!

I hate sorting socks. Like a really weird hate. THey will pile up for days and days before I sort them.

So, Daddy has white ankle socks. Chris wears black ankle socks. Sis and I share socks so it doesn't matter where they end up. I like that Hanes has color-coded heels to make sock-sorting easier.

And the best laundry trick? I taught my 13 year old to do his own laundry!

    Happy Laundry Day!

  2. that's a great tip you've shared, Linny! 🙂 I'm trying to think of what things I've kept simple…. I can't think of any, but if I do, I'll leave a comment about it in the future.

Hope everything was ok with your Dr's appointment.(I just saw your tweet. I will pray).

  3. We only have the three kids….but for my socks I do safety pin them together after the kids take them off.

For my first aid kit…I have a fishing tackle box. Nerdy for sure. I don't have band-aid thieves and being a former wound care nurse, I'm a bit weird about sorting sizes of bandages. With Evan around, I've appropriately added butterfly closures and ice packs. :0)

I really like your bag idea! For the one in the car, I use a gallon size generic ziploc freezer bag…as it doubles GREAT for a barf bag.

Is laundry next? I need a grip on mine. The laundry room is in the dingy but dry basement, two flights down.

    Or perhaps home school organization?

    yes…praying for you.

  4. Linny,

We love Vick's on the feet too!
I am not sure about doing a McLinky thing….my computer has issues…so I thought I would let you know one of my SIMPLIFY tips…I used to have issues with my two youngest getting their clothes all over the place…so I decided to put outfits in ziploc bags and put those in a basket…then, there is no need to be digging through drawers…So, for my daughter, who is 8, I wrote the days on her bags and place in there everything she needs…right down to socks and undies…for my son, 4, I started by putting his clothes in bags with nothing on the bag, but then found the bags all over and wasn't sure if they were his or not…so I wrote his name on his bags…I think I have about 2 weeks for him and he doesn't have that many socks and skivvies so we do need to hunt those down more…When I am doing their laundry, I fold and put the outfits back into the bags…making new outfits or swapping with some of the other things in their drawers. This has made all of our lives MUCH SIMPLER…they aren't pulling every last thing out trying to figure out what to wear and I am not re-washing clean clothes!!!! Picture one happy momma!~
I love the bag idea and may try one of my own!
    C~

  5. We do Vicks on the feet for coughs too…it is awesome! None of my friends will believe me that it works. In fact, it is the ONLY thing I've found that will actually stop that hacking nighttime cough. FABULOUS!

  6. What a neat idea. I love the vicks vapor rub for a cough!! Never thought of that. And yes we are on vacation, sitting in the Rockie mountains in a friends camper they let us use. Mind you, it's mighty small for the 3 of us, yet we are having a blast. And do I love those mountains. Hugs and prayers
