Memorial Box Monday: Candy From a Stranger

Today’s Memorial Box story I have never told although
it happened about 10 years ago.
In fact most people outside our family have never heard it.
It is a story of God’s miraculous protection!
Many years ago, we were on a family trip.
and were very far from home.
We had stopped for gas at a huge new station
in who knows where!
As with most of the new, big, super-sized store/gas stations there were lots of cars getting gas and many people moving about.
I had taken most of the kids inside to use the restrooms.
However Graham, who was 7 years old at the time,
had decided to stay outside to help
daddy fill the car with gas.
While waiting for the tank to fill,
Graham had gotten the window washer squeegee
and had decided to
wash down all the windows of the van.
By God’s grace, Graham happened to notice a man in a car parked near.  He thought he could tell the man was fidgeting with something inside the car.
Graham, being our cautious kid, had been keeping
a bit of an eye on the man and no doubt, the Holy Spirit working inside Graham, Graham had felt uneasy as he watched the man.
Graham continued to wash the windows.
Before long, Graham was at one side of the car and
Dw was on the other pumping the gas.
Suddenly, without warning, the man whom Graham had noticed a few minutes earlier was standing beside Graham.
Thrusting his hand toward Graham’s hand he said,
“You have been such a good boy, here is something for you.”
And into Graham’s hand he placed a hard candy.
Our pile of kids and I were arriving back at the car at just about that exact same time.  There was a lot of commotion.
Graham climbed into the car with everyone else.
Slamming car doors,
everyone settling back into the van,
snapping seat belts,
as Daddy started up the car to get back on track.
As all you with a large family know,
after every stop there is quite a bit of chatter.
So we were heading down the road a ways when
out of nowhere, Graham, who is known for his quiet spirit said,
“That man at the gas station gave me a candy.”
I whipped my head around!
“What man? HE WHAT? Graham! Did you eat it?”
“No mom.  It’s right here.”
He then added,
“And the paper around it looks like he’s been messing with it.”

Slowly, Graham unwrapped the partially opened
outer cellophane
wrapper and gasped!
There sticking straight out of the candy was
a large piece of a razor blade –
sticking straight up out of the candy!
Straight up!
I gasped!
Our mouths dropped open and our eyes grew wider than wide.
There is little doubt that the gentleman who handed Graham the
candy intended to bring harm to our precious little boy!
Of all our kids, the most cautious would be Graham,
thank the Lord!
We still shudder to think what could have happened if he had
popped it into his mouth without paying attention.
Faithful God.

That would be why we call HIM our
miracle-working,
mountain-moving,
awe-inspiring,
gasp-giving

GOD…

working behind the scenes to prevent
some potentially very serious consequences

that could have deeply harmed our precious little boy.

What about you?
What has our Faithful God done for you or yours?
