Isaiah’s First Casting – To Greeley, CO and Back

Thank you to each and everyone of you who prayed us to Greeley, CO and back. We put about 912 miles on the car, were in a snowstorm part of the way, icy roads a good portion (driving 28mph for about 3 hours), even got lost for 2 very l-o-n-g hours in downtown Denver, got Isaiah’s legs cast and returned home 52 hours later. Whew!

Scenes from the trip…..(Being a pine-tree lover, I made Emma lean out in the snow and freezing temps and take some pictures for you my bloggy friends, who don’t have the privilege of living in the mountains…)

Isaiah slept more than normal as we drove..I think it was the stress of what was about to happen. We had been telling Isaiah that we would find a T*ys R Us after he was cast for a special treat. The morning of the doctor’s appointment Emma said to him, “Hey, today we get to go find a present at T*oys R Us.” He said, “Ummm, I don’t think I want a present.” (Smart little guy and yes, he understood perfectly well what would have to come before the present!

I’ve seen alot of doctors in my 50 years. I don’t know if I’ve ever met one as kind and gentle as Dr. Hatch. His “bedside manner” was unbelievable. He took his time. He asked Isaiah if he had any questions. Isaiah did. (It was so sweet and yes, he had come up with the question all on his own.) He answered Isaiah’s question with great care. He gave Isaiah gloves to “help” as he did it. He hugged Isaiah when it was all done. Dr. Hatch’s staff loved Isaiah. Even those not involved with his case came in for a peak (having heard how cute he is) at this tender hearted smiling little guy of ours.

On a sidenote and definitely the most exciting news of all…..Dr. Hatch looked at the x-rays of Isaiah’s hands. For those who don’t know or remember, Isaiah’s hands are severely affected by the Arthrogryposis. A hand specialist had said (about a year ago) that there was no hope for his hands – which was earth shattering to Isaiah and us. Isaiah is so deeply troubled by his hands, it breaks our hearts.
Anyway, after Dr. Hatch looked at the x-rays, he said we should really seek another opinion from a different hand specialist because he felt there was something that quite possibly could be done to help Isaiah’s hands. We were ecstatic at even the thought – his words gave us such hope!!
Thank you for all your prayers dear friends. We have to go back in 9 days to be recast again. This will go on for quite a few castings and then he will have surgery. Isaiah’s attitude with the casts on is something that everyone could take a lesson from…including adults. He has not complained once. His smile is unending and he is a remarkable patient.
At the moment Dw is on his way to pick up a pediatric wheelchair in a neighboring city. Your continued prayers are greatly appreciated….and if you get to meet our little guy – you will agree – he is one very, very, very extra-special treasure – from the heart of God!! How blessed we are!

YES, we are already at about 17 inches of snow–more to come. It has not stopped. We are completely snowed in here. Not a bad thing–hubby got to stay home for the day 🙂

  7. Praise God for a wonderful doctor!!! I pray that the time flies while he is in his casts. I am sure Sally mentioned to you, but the plasma cars are great to allow the kids to still have independent mobility. My sweet son now pushes with his feet to move it (working on his dorsiflexion..bonus:-) I am praying for you ,too, as you are caring for your sweet son in casts.

And, great news about the second opinion for his hands!! Praise God, or to quote an inspiring woman, “Yippee Jesus”!

  8. Well, YIPPEE JESUS! 🙂 Sweet boy! What great news about the possibility of help for his little hands. It breaks my heart that it troubles him so! I just love his smile…wish I were near, to love on him a bit! And the rest of the crew, while I was at it! 🙂

  11. Linny, his feet look so good right now it is not going to take long to get them in the right position.Bryson’s never looked like that until after the first surgery!!! Sounds like he is being a great trooper as well. We are praying for him here! I showed Bryson his picture and he said, “Like me?” It was too cute!!!

I am not sure if he was referring to how cute Isaiah is or to his casts!!!!

  12. Having had the honor of getting to know this little man I totally agree with you Mrs. Linny your little man is a true blessing to all! I am praying for you guys and him as well. He lights up a dark day and his smile is so adoreable. Thank you for sharing this little man with us! God has big plans for him and you can already see His hand working in his life right now! Much love and blessings!

  13. Oh Isaiah! You are so brave! I think you are the bravest little men I have ever met, even in China! You are so handsome and strong! Have you let people put notes on your casts yet? If so, I want you to have your mommy write a note that says “we love you!” From Bill, Lynsay, Mercy and Adria.

  14. So thankful that all went well. It is such a blessing having the Dr. that you did. Its just so much more relaxing for the parent and child. He is so darn cute. I know everytime my husband sees his picture he just gets the biggest kick out of him. What a sweety!

  15. So thankful that all went well. It is such a blessing having the Dr. that you did. Its just so much more relaxing for the parent and child. He is so darn cute. I know everytime my husband sees his picture he just gets the biggest kick out of him. What a sweety!

  16. The pictures are beautiful. My son has been home from China for 4 years and has had 7 surgeries. He is my hero, he does not complain about pain or nothing. It does break my heart to know that he does hurt but want ask for pain meds. I know when he was in China when he hurt and no one was there for him, We are so blessed to be his parents. We will pray for your little brave man as he goes through the castings.

  17. Love the Colorado photos! I sure miss living in Colorado! Thanks for sharing Emma!
So glad to hear all went well today! And great news about Isaiah’s hands! Praying for God to give your doctors wisdom!

    ~Jodi Sue 🙂

  18. How precious he is. I just love him! And we will continue to pray for him, and for the other needs you have recently mentioned. I hope you will update us on how Autumn is doing.

  19. Praise God that you made it there and back safely. When I heard about the snow storm in CO, I immediately thought of you traveling.

Isaiah sounds so much like Mylee. Through all her castings, e-rays, MRI’s, and surgeries, she has been such a trooper. She has always had a smile on her face and has never once complained. She is a true blessing and has definitely taught all of us a thing or two.

I will continue to pray for Isaiah as he goes through his castings and surgery.

  20. Yippee! Sounds like a couple of unexpected blessings, right? That is EXACTLY what I prayed for. So you went there and got some wonderful hope for Isaiah’s hands. Talk about God having a purpose, even when something seems difficult.

And do you have the sweetest boy or what? I can tell you firsthand that I was NOT a happy camper during my four castings! My poor mom… and you two look like you’re on a photo shoot 🙂

    Much love!

  21. Aw- what a cutie!! My cousin’s son is a dwarf and had surgery on both of his legs last year- same thing- two full leg casts at the same time. They got him a wheelchair for school but he decided that it was just faster to scoot on his tush around the house. So funny how kids just “make it work” without complaining!

  22. I’m glad the two of you made it back home safely. I am so sorry that I missed your phone call. I thought you were in Denver at Children’s. Greeley is only about 15 miles from us, and if you EVER need a place to stay, the offer is always open.

    ~Linda from Northern Colorado

  23. His fingers and hands look pretty good compared to my daughters. But, worse than my sons. I’d love to chat with you if you find a good hand specialist. We go to one next month in Dallas. We have been told here there is nothing they can do for her or our son. We are in the middle of casting 1 child and start another child next week! ugh…. I bet he gets around with no problems with those casts! Kids are AMAZING!

    Blessings,
    Carla

When do you think you will travel for Miss Jubilee? My son asks about her often!! We keep praying she is home SOON!!

  24. I will pray that there is hope for his hands!!!!!! I remember being so sad for you and him after that diagnoses. (when I was a lurker on Journey To Me) Glad you are home safe and sound. The snow finally melted in Michigan, maybe blue skies or headed your way.
    Sheri Keys

  25. Oh sweet, smiling, brave Isaiah! I am so proud of you!

Linny, so good to know you are home safe and sound. It sounds like it was quite the trip–and you have to do it again in 9 days? Whew. Praising the Lord for a wonderful doctor, and for the hopeful news about Isaiah’s hands! He is Good!

Continuing to pray for all of you.

    Love,

    Tina

  26. I’ll be praying for Isaiah each time God brings him to mind. I’m so thankful to hear that there is something that may be done for his hands, especially if he is troubled by them.

Thank Emma for freazing so we could see the beautiful picture of those tall sticks in the ground…the ones I think you call trees. Yeah, we don’t see those often in West Tx.! Glad you made it home safely.

Love that DW made an appearance! His post was so encouraging!!!

  27. Praying for Precious Isaiah! I've had casts on both legs, but not at the same time. Love that he hasn't complained and is such a trooper. 🙂 Praying for all of you as you help your boy through this season of healing. (And for your back!) Hugs & blessings, Amy in OR

  28. OK, so I woke up in the middle of the night and could not go back to sleep. I read your post earlier today and wanted to comment so here goes.

Every time I look at Isaiah and see his sweet dimples and his adorable smile… I am reminded of God’s love. His story… his journey to you.. all of it is saturated in the love of God and I am just praying that the casting is something that God will just make seamless. Isaiah’s sweet nature is awesome. We are so blessed to have him here in Durango. I can’t wait to see how this helps him…and praise JESUS for the news from your awesome doctor who sees hope… I’m praying for Dr. Hatch too! lv, jen

  29. I’m so glad your home safe!

Oh how I can tell just by pictures that Isaiah has a heart of gold. I hope I can meet him someday.

  32. Linny,
Praying for your sweet Isaiah. He looked very brave. He is really something special. We are in china and just 16 hours away from getting Gideon who also has arthrogyposis, very severe. So we will be going through all of the castings and surgeries as well. Will be in touch. Blessings to you.Jackie
