Our Son John

Always wanting those who aren’t on FB to know when our lives take an unexpected detour, I try to post here as I value your love and prayers. Life has been a blur since yesterday, so this is my first chance to update you all about Our Son John.

Hey friends, if you are up, would you please pray for our Johnny? Just about a week ago John came to the table for breakfast and said that his neck was hurting a lot. Each day it continued to grow worse and he noticed there was a lump in it.

A doctor visit, blood work (mono test) and John only grew more sleepy, very weak, and the lump grew so that it was protruding and covering most of the one side of his neck – making it easily visible. I was growing more and more concerned as we waited for the mono test – which came back this AM – negative.

Then this afternoon John told me he was having trouble catching his breath. I called Dw at his office and asked him to come right home and take him to the ER.

Anyway, they’ve run tests and the ER doc (who has been an ER doc for over 20 years) said she’s never seen anything like it. John’s a very sick young man. He is NPO in case they need to take him to surgery in the night. They will also try to drain it to provide some relief. Tests so far reveal a very unusual looking abscess inside his mastoid muscle with unexplained air bubbles in it. I may have that wrong, but you get the idea. The pain is intense.

Oh me. Dw just texted me that the doc said it’s grown since he came in a few hours ago. Would you please pray for our handsome son? When his last birthday was approaching he told me that he wished he wouldn’t get older but rather younger, “I waited 14 years for a family and it’s hard to grow up.” He’s such a treasure and always willing to pray with me! Please pray that God would give them His wisdom beyond their medical knowledge on what this is, how to proceed and that God would heal him quickly!

His breathing is becoming more compromised so they are taking him to the OR right now. Please pray!

UPDATE: Friday 5am Phoenix 11/13/2020

During surgery they drained the infection and have a small tube in to continue draining the area. Surgeon said it was all muscular. Surgeon said John probably fell (to our knowledge he did not as he is non-mobile) and got a bruise – which in turn got very infected – the bubbles mean it was forming a gas. They will culture it and the draining will continue.

Please pray for his healing and also for continued wisdom as the surgeon said they need to be sure to use the right antibiotic to use. Thank you so much for praying – it means so much.

Dw and I switched places this morning and it feels so good to be up here with him. The surgeon came in right after I arrived which was a bonus. We are waiting on pathology to see what we’re dealing with and he said it could take a few days. Small possibility that he may need to go back in and clean out more depending on what pathology shows. He did say he hasn’t seen anything like this in at least probably 10 years – it’s that rare. John’s on three different IV antibiotics and his neck is draining.John did ask if I had told anyone that he was in the hospital.

I opened up FB and told him that there were literally hundreds around the world praying for him and that everyone who knows him, loves him. He smiled sweetly.

Grateful hugs from the 9th floor where we praise our astoundingly faithful God for His mercy over Johnny and for each of you and all the prayers, texts, messages and calls. We rest knowing that God loves, He sees, He hears and He moves when people pray.

UPDATE: Saturday, November 14th, 2020 7:00PM

Today John’s coloring is β€œgray-er”and he is in more pain and not very perky. When I got in his room I told him I’d brought my baton from my high school majorette days to twirl – even offering to twirl fire but still not even a tiny smile – and you guys know how smiley he usually is. We continue to wait for the pathology reports. Thankful for all your prayers you are sending heavenward for our handsome but still very sick guy on the 9th.

Oh friends – John is showing signs of improvement – your prayers are producing results! His sweet smile is returning – thank you Jesus! Thank you, friends, for loving our son – his precious smile is an expression of his tender, kind and caring heart and everyone who knows him – loves him!

There are still some questions – so please pray that no stone will be left unturned that needs to be turned.

UPDATE: Wednesday, November 18, 2020 12:30PM

Oh friends, it looks like our Johnny-boy has turned the corner and today I can say he is looking better – finally!! John is home and recuperating and we are so thankful.

Thank you for diligently praying for his healing – he sure was sick.

There are still some concerns lingering, so please, if our John should cross your minds, please pray for continued wisdom and healing. He sees our pediatrician tomorrow and the surgeon in early December.
