Our Kitchen Transformation….

We are totally loving our new home.
It’s been six months living here, already!
Personally, I cannot tell you how thankful I am to know that we are
“home” – finally.
I’m still unpacking boxes that have been piled in the garage
because we never unpacked them in the rental,
nor was their time to unpack them during the ‘no backyard’ house era.
I’ve found things I had completely forgotten we had.
We’ve donated tons of things to the local thrift store
and given some things away.
Our kitchen is awesome and is definitely the hub of the home.
It’s roomy and functional.
and
I love it.
The oak cabinets are fine,
but down deep I am a white cupboard girl.
I love white kitchens –
they are so fresh and crisp.
We had a white kitchen in the first apartment
we ever lived in when we were first married back in 1978.
Then we had a white kitchen when we pastored in
both Virginia and North Carolina.
So I asked Dw what he thought about painting them here in Phoenix?
He was game.
And then I showed him some ideas I had to give the kitchen a whole
new look.
Dw is really good with wood projects and he was stoked
to pull out the old table saw and put his
 carpentry skills to use again.
Dw’s dad was the ultimate in “projects” and Dw was
always his trusted helper when he was growing up and even when we
were married.  We would go to his parents home an hour and a half
away and Dw would lend his dad a hand at whatever project was
going on.
Anyway…
I thought you all might enjoy seeing the kitchen go through
a DIY transformation over the next few months.
Sort of the “before”, “during” and “after” shots…
For starters, while Liberty and I were in Africa,
Dw painted the island black.
It was oak, although the original owner had stained it darker
than the rest of the cupboards.
I really like it black.

So here is what the kitchen looked like at the beginning….

And now this is what Dw did recently.
He is building up the top to give the illusion of taller cabinets.
This is gonna’ be fun!
Don’t they look awesome??
Pretty stinkin’ stoked.
More soon.
{Lord willing}

  1. It is going to be awesome. So glad you have a handy man around the house like that. The white cabinets are going to transform that kitchen into a place that reflects the specialness of the kitchen. It's going to be perfect!

  2. How wonderful!
My soon to be husband and I are in the process of buying a fixer-upper. And I can not wait to get to do the same thing in my own home.

    1. Oh fixer uppers are the best!! Sweat equity is the best way to make money on a property – go girl! We've done more fixer uppers in our day then I could count!!

  3. How fun!! You KNOW I'd totally be there helping you if I could. It's funny, one of the first memories I have of DW is seeing him leaving Home Depot in Durango with Isaiah and Elijah. I don't know if I said "hi" to him or not. I don't think I did but I knew it was him because I think we had attended the River Church one time. He was working on building shelves probably in the laundry room.

  4. You are going to love the white cabinets! My cupboards are white and my walls a cheery yellow and I absolutely love it! Can't wait to see the finished project.

  5. What you've done already is great! I'm a white kitchen gal too so hope to paint our cupboards this summer too. I want to find bead board wallpaper to put on the ends of the cabinets. I've seen it on Pinterest and it's a great look at a fraction of the cost. That works!!
